The Last Lantern Keeper of Elderglow

In the misty valleys where the mountains kiss the sea, there once stood a village called Elderglow. Not many maps still marked it. The ink had faded on most, and the younger generations had long since moved to the bright cities where electric lights never slept. But old Mara still lived there, the last Lantern Keeper.

Every evening as the sun dipped behind the jagged peaks, Mara would walk the ancient stone path that wound through the village. Her shoulders were stooped now, her hands wrinkled like the bark of the elder trees, but her step was steady. On her back she carried a heavy iron lantern, its glass etched with protective runes that no one alive could still read. Inside burned a flame that never went out — or so the stories claimed.

The villagers who remained (a handful of stubborn farmers, a retired fisherman, and a young girl named Lira who refused to leave her grandmother) would watch from their doorways as Mara passed. They no longer believed the old tales, but something in them still felt safer when the lantern’s warm golden light swept across their windows.

One autumn evening, the wind carried a different kind of chill. The sea was restless, throwing white-capped waves against the black rocks. Mara paused at the highest point of the path, where the lantern post stood waiting. She lifted the heavy lantern onto its hook and adjusted the wick with the care of someone who had done this for seventy-three years.

That night, the flame flickered strangely.

Lira, who was twelve and far too curious for her own good, crept out after her grandmother had gone to bed. She followed the path up to the lantern post and found Mara already there, staring at the restless flame.

“Grandma,” Lira whispered, “why does the light look worried tonight?”

Mara didn’t answer right away. She simply patted the stone post as if it were an old friend. “Because something is coming, child. Something that hasn’t walked these lands in a very long time.”

The next morning, the sky was the color of bruised plums. By midday, the first shadow appeared on the horizon — a tall figure wrapped in a cloak the color of midnight. He moved without sound, yet every bird in the valley fell silent as he passed.

The stranger stopped at the edge of Elderglow. His face was hidden, but his voice carried on the wind like distant thunder.

“I seek the Last Lantern,” he said. “The one that holds back the Long Dark.”

The remaining villagers gathered, frightened but defiant. Mara stepped forward, smaller than the stranger by two heads, yet she seemed taller in that moment.

“This lantern has kept the valley safe for generations,” she said. “It is not yours to take.”

The stranger laughed softly. “Old woman, the world beyond these mountains has already forgotten your kind. The Long Dark is coming whether you light your little flame or not. I offer you mercy. Give me the lantern and I will let your people leave in peace.”

Lira watched from behind her grandmother’s skirts, heart hammering. She had heard the stories a thousand times: how the first Lantern Keeper had made a pact with the mountain spirits. How the flame was not mere fire but a fragment of the first dawn. How as long as it burned, the valley would never know true night.

But she had also heard the newer stories — the ones her schoolteachers in the city told before she stopped going. Stories about superstition and progress. Stories that said the old ways were dying and should be allowed to.

Mara looked at her granddaughter and saw the doubt.

“Child,” she said quietly, “do you trust the light you can see, or the light you can feel?”

Before Lira could answer, the stranger raised his hand. Darkness spilled from his fingers like ink poured into water. It swallowed the path behind him, turning wildflowers to ash and birdsong to silence.

The villagers cried out. Some ran for their homes. Others stood frozen.

Mara lifted the lantern from its post. The flame inside surged brighter, pushing back against the spreading dark. For a moment, the two forces met — golden warmth against swallowing black — and the air itself seemed to scream.

Lira stepped forward without thinking. She placed her small hand over her grandmother’s on the lantern’s handle.

Together they held it high.

The flame roared. It wasn’t just light anymore. It was memory. It was every evening walk Mara had ever taken. It was every child who had once followed the glow home. It was every prayer whispered by those who had lived and loved in Elderglow for centuries.

The stranger staggered back. “Impossible,” he hissed. “The pact should have ended with the last true believer.”

Mara smiled, tired but triumphant. “Belief doesn’t die when people stop speaking it aloud, stranger. It lives in the ones who still feel it in their bones.”

What happened next would be told in different ways depending on who you asked.

Some said the stranger dissolved into smoke. Others claimed he simply turned and walked back into the sea from which he had come. A few swore they saw wings of shadow unfold from his back before he vanished.

But everyone agreed on one thing: the lantern burned brighter than it had in decades. Its light reached farther than ever before, touching even the distant city lights on the horizon for one impossible moment.

When the sun rose the next morning, the valley felt different. The mist was lighter. The birds sang louder. And Lira, standing beside her grandmother as they lit the lantern once more, understood something she hadn’t before.

Some lights are meant to be carried.
Some stories are meant to be kept alive.
And sometimes the bravest thing a person can do is refuse to let the dark convince them that the light was never real.

Years later, when travelers passed through what remained of Elderglow, they would find a new lantern post at the entrance to the village. Beside it stood a young woman with steady hands and bright eyes. She would smile at them and say:

“Welcome. The light is still here. And it always will be, as long as someone is willing to carry it.”

Road-Trip Reflections: Why I Always Pack a Pen

There’s something magical about watching the world roll by from the passenger seat while the kids nap in the back. On our last long drive I kept a small notebook on my lap and wrote whatever popped into my head—funny things the kids said at rest stops, the way golden light hit the wheat fields, how my heart felt when we finally saw the mountains appear on the horizon.

Writing while we travel turns the in-between moments into something permanent. Later, when life gets hectic, I can open that notebook and instantly feel the same calm we had on the road.

It’s become our family’s quiet love language: “Remember when we wrote about the sunset in Wyoming?”

Some ~~weekends~~ we don’t go far at all. We just drive thirty minutes to the old-growth trail near Grandma’s house and walk until the trees swallow the sound of traffic. The kids know the rules: no phones, no rushing, just “listen with your whole body.”

Last Saturday we found a fallen log that looked like a dragon. We sat on it for almost an hour—talking, not talking, watching sunlight dance on moss. I pulled out my little travel journal and wrote three sentences: “Today the forest reminded me that peace isn’t the absence of noise. It’s the presence of wonder.”

Those short, simple walks have become the calmest part of our month. No fancy destination required.
